Plagiarism Resources
Q: Are there resources that can help faculty to identify whether students have taken material from online sites without citing the source?

A:  Yes, the University has a site license for  TURNITIN.com. It is easy to use and the  staff at FCTeL can instruct you.  Please see note from legal counsel:
http://teaching.uncc.edu/e-learning-tool/turnitin. Even though TURNITIN doesn’t confirm that the paper was plagiarized, if the faculty has concern, ask the student to engage in a discussion of the main points and themes of the paper.

I'm already overburdened
Q: I’ve heard stories of how much time it takes to report and resolve a cheating case, and I’m already overburdened with work.

A:  Most cases are resolved in a timely manner. The new online reporting form allows faculty to easily report cases of suspected academic integrity violations. When students are accused they often admit their wrongdoing and accept the penalty. If a hearing is required, the rights of faculty and the students are clearly outlined in The Code. Delays tend to occur when cases come up at the end of the semester and must be delayed until the student and faculty return to campus.

How can faculty promote academic integrity in the classroom?
Q: How can faculty promote academic integrity in the classroom?

A:  Devote a part of the first class to why academic integrity is important to you and why it is important in your field. The resources listed on this website include examples of how to encourage integrity in the classroom and how to discourage cheating. Many techniques to deter cheating are synonymous with good teaching methods. Clearly state expectations in advance, for example how and to what extent collaboration on assignments is allowed.
